Destiny on TV? Bungie Hired an Arcane Veteran, and I'm Hyped

Destiny 2 and Destiny IP could expand with Bungie hiring Arcane alum, hinting at a potential animated series backed by Sony’s resources.

Okay, real talk: 🎮 I have spent an embarrassing number of hours in Destiny 2, and I still cannot explain the Hive worm gods to my friends without sounding like a conspiracy theorist who discovered a new flavor of tinfoil. The Destiny IP is Bungie's crown jewel, and it has been flexing its lore muscles for years. It is deep, weird, and full of space magic that would make a philosopher weep. So when I heard that Bridget O'Neill, an ex-Riot developer who worked on Arcane, joined Bungie Creative Studios as a Senior Director, my ears perked up like a Hunter hearing a loot drop.

Arcane is basically the gold standard for video game adaptations. It took League of Legends lore, which is not exactly a bedtime story, and turned it into a gorgeous, emotionally devastating animated series. If Bungie hired someone from that team, it is not a coincidence. It is a signal flare. A Destiny TV show or movie has been rumored for a while, and this hire makes the rumor feel less like a leaky ship and more like a loaded gun. The only question is whether it will be live-action or animated. Given O'Neill's background, I would bet my last Ascendant Shard on animation. ✨

The timing is impeccable. Sony acquired Bungie back in 2022, and Sony has been very clear that it wants to help Bungie grow the Destiny IP across different platforms. Sony also owns Crunchyroll and Funimation, which are two of the biggest anime streaming platforms on the planet. That is not just a coincidence; that is a pipeline. Sony has already turned The Last of Us into an HBO series and Uncharted and Gran Turismo into movies. The company knows how to take a game and make it a screen thing. So a Destiny show is not a wild fever dream. It is a business plan with a soundtrack.

Here is a quick breakdown of why this makes sense:

Reason Why I care
Deep lore The Destiny universe has enough backstory to fill a hundred seasons.
New player entry point A show can do what Arcane did for League of Legends: make the universe approachable.
Sony's resources Sony has streaming platforms, film studios, and a hunger for IP.
Arcane precedent O'Neill worked on a show that made gamers and non-gamers cry. 😭
Bungie Cinematic Universe If it works, we might get more Bungie stories on screen.

The lore barrier is real. I have tried explaining the Hive worm gods to friends and watched their souls leave their bodies. A TV show or film could serve as an entry point to the series, just like Arcane did for League of Legends. It can make the universe approachable without dumbing it down. A Destiny show set in the Dark Age, or following a fresh Guardian, or even exploring the collapse, could be incredible. The possibilities are as endless as a Vex time loop.

Fast-forward to 2026: we still do not have an official Destiny cinematic universe, and my popcorn is getting stale. 🍿 But the signs are still there. Bungie has kept Destiny alive through expansions and seasons, and Sony is still the proud parent of a streaming empire. If anything, the appetite for game adaptations has only grown. The Last of Us season 2, Fallout, Arcane's finale, and a dozen other projects have proven that audiences will show up for well-told game stories. Hollywood finally figured out that games have stories worth telling. Don't @ me.

If a Destiny show happens, what should it be? An animated series about the Dark Age? A live-action movie about the first Crota fireteam? A prestige drama about a Guardian who just wants to dismantle one more god and go home? I am here for all of it. Just please, for the love of the Traveler, do not make it a 90-minute origin story where a blueberry learns to double-jump. We have suffered enough.

A successful show could propel Destiny's popularity to greater heights. It could even spawn a Bungie Cinematic Universe. Imagine a Marathon series, a Myth show, or a crossover where Master Chief and a Guardian argue about who has the better armor. Okay, that last one is a legal nightmare, but a Guardian can dream. The Destiny IP has always been Bungie's crown jewel. It deserves a screen adaptation that treats its lore with respect, its characters with nuance, and its fans with the kind of payoff that makes us yell at our TVs in a good way.

So, Bungie, if you are reading this: the script is right there. The lore is deeper than a Vex simulation. The fans are hungry. And I have a couch with a permanent indent shaped like my fireteam. Make the show. I will bring the snacks.
