Cryptic Quatrains II: A Guardian’s Pirate Treasure Hunt Through Destiny 2

Cryptic Quatrains II: a Destiny 2 Season of Plunder riddle quest from H.E.L.M. to buried treasure, with full legacy steps.

Long before the 2026 episodes and the shifting seasonal model that followed The Final Shape, Destiny 2's Season of Plunder sent Guardians across the solar system as pirates. Among its most memorable side quests was Cryptic Quatrains II, a riddle-driven hunt that began at the H.E.L.M. and ended with buried treasure. In 2026, the season itself is no longer active, and Bungie's content vaulting has moved much of that era into memory. Even so, Cryptic Quatrains II remains a fascinating example of how Destiny 2 once blended puzzles, seasonal activities, and exploration. For any Guardian revisiting legacy content or studying the design of Season of Plunder, the full path is preserved below.

The quest is obtained through the Star Chart in the H.E.L.M. Once the Guardian reaches Star Chart rank 10, they can purchase the Medium Treasure Beacon. This unlocks Cryptic Quatrains II, which operates much like Cryptic Quatrains I. That earlier quest required rank 7 and the Small Treasure Beacon. Both quests present pirate-themed riddles that lead the Guardian across the solar system toward a final buried treasure. The journey is part scavenger hunt, part combat challenge, and part love letter to the Season of Plunder's nautical fantasy.

Step Riddle Focus Destination Key Action
1 Bay, chest, drown, mist, dreamed, lost, wished, fist Dreaming City Complete Bay of Drowned Wishes Lost Sector
2 Dead, lake, shadows, strike, words, ears European Dead Zone Complete Lake of Shadows Strike
3 Expedition, bones, crewmate, sword, wield H.E.L.M. Expeditions Complete an Expedition with a Sword equipped
4 Nessus, column, cistern, pyramid, pass through Nessus, The Cistern Reach the pyramid-shaped entrance and interact
5 Crewmates, fluid, broken sphere, treasure Nessus, northwest Cistern Dig up the final treasure

Step 1: The Bay of Drowned Wishes 🏴☠️

The first riddle is cryptic, but its highlighted words point toward a specific location. The verse speaks of a bay that filled the Guardian's chest, a drowning that never happened, a shivering journey through mist, and a dream of being lost. The final line insists that what was wished for was already tight in the fist. The solution is the Dreaming City. Upon landing, the Guardian must turn around and enter the Bay of Drowned Wishes Lost Sector. They fight through the Lost Sector as normal, defeat its enemies, and loot the chest at the end. Once the Lost Sector is complete, the quest updates.

Step 2: The Lake of Shadows ⚔️

The second riddle is more direct. It mentions a shore, a lake, long shadows, and a strike. The Guardian is told that though enemies struck out and took their words, those words found ears but did not find the Guardian. The destination is the European Dead Zone, and the activity is the Lake of Shadows Strike. While it is possible to queue for Vanguard Strikes and hope for the right one, the smarter path is to select Lake of Shadows directly from the EDZ map screen. After the Strike is complete, the quest advances.

Step 3: Expeditions and Drawn Swords 🗡️

The third riddle describes a long expedition that led to no reward, bones crying for rest, and a fear of a crewmate's drawn sword. The answer is the Expeditions seasonal activity, accessible from the H.E.L.M. The critical detail is that the Guardian must have a Sword equipped in the Power Weapon slot during the activity. Without a Sword, the quest will not update. With the blade ready, the Guardian completes an Expedition and moves to the next riddle.

Step 4: The Cistern and the Pyramid’s Imprint 🔺

The fourth riddle points to red ground, a column reaching into alien hue, a cistern that gives no water, and a pyramid's imprint. The destination is Nessus. Specifically, the Guardian travels to The Cistern landing zone. The destination is visible immediately upon spawning: a broken pillar in the distance straight ahead, with a pyramid-shaped entrance at its base. The Guardian travels north and west along the path toward the Well of Flame. After passing through the pyramid-shaped entrance, they spot a glowing green mark on the ground just off to the right. Interacting with it leads to the final step.

Step 5: The Broken Sphere and the Treasure 💎

The final riddle speaks of crewmates nearing, terrible fluid falling from the sky, a broken sphere, and a safe place for treasure. From the Well of Flame, the Guardian heads to the northwest corner of the Cistern subarea on Nessus. There they find a broken sphere half-submerged in the ground, with a beautiful waterfall of radiolaria in the distance. Just past the broken sphere, another glowing green mark appears on the ground. Digging there yields Season of Plunder gear, map fragments, and the second Crude Cypher Fragment. The first Crude Cypher Fragment came from Cryptic Quatrains I. At the time, the purpose of these fragments was unclear, but the questline promised more answers later. Once the Guardian reaches Star Chart rank 16, they can acquire the Large Treasure Beacon to begin the next stage of the questline.

A 2026 Reflection 🧭

In 2026, Cryptic Quatrains II is a relic of a different Destiny 2 era. Season of Plunder has long since ended, and many seasonal activities have been vaulted or rotated out. For Guardians who remember the pirate fantasy, the quest stands as a clever fusion of lore, exploration, and gear hunting. For newer players, it is a window into how Bungie once built seasonal questlines around riddles rather than simple checklists. Should the quest ever return in a legacy rotation, the steps above remain the map. The Medium Treasure Beacon, the riddles, the Sword requirement, and the final radiolaria waterfall all form a trail that still captures the spirit of plunder. 🏴☠️
